
Sam Spanier Centenary at Woodstock Artists Association
Sam Spanier (1925-2008) met Mother in 1962 and had a subsequent vision to found a Center in America. In 1965 he bought a 47 acre parcel outside of Woodstock, New York with a small house and garage. Over the next 60 years Matagiri hosted numerous visitors from the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville including Champaklal, Udar Pinto, Balkrishna Poddar, V.M. Reddy, Manoj Das, Arabinda Basu, Mangesh Nadkarni, Ananda Reddy, Savitra, Claude Arpi, Frederick Schulze Buxloh, Aviram Rozin, Joan Tomb, Georges Van Vrekhem and numerous others.
A reception, comments on his life and a 22 minute film by Piotr Redlinski will be screened starting at 5:30 pm.
An exhibition of Sam’s art will be held at Matagiri throughout the month of May. On May 6th, his birthday, the film will be shown at 9, 2 and 8 via Zoom.
